About  

The Public Services team aims to provide you with the skills, experience and knowledge that will enable you to develop a career in the fire service, police, prison service or armed forces. The personal skills that you will develop, teamed with the knowledge and understanding that you will gain, will set you up perfectly for the career you want.

Our courses aim to help you develop the personal skills and qualities that the public services require. They will enable you to improve on skills such as communication and personal responsibility. This will assist your application to your chosen public service. Our courses also include a range of day trips, careers talks, visiting speakers and residential trips.

The Public Service provision offers a range of full-time courses to suit students at all ability levels, from North Kent and surrounding areas. Our courses include NCFE Level 1, 2 and 3 in Public Services and BTEC Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma qualifications, for employment in the uniformed services.

What will I learn? 

You will learn how the different public services operate and the types of skills that you will need to succeed. You will partake in both theory and practical work. You will learn how to work as a team, develop leadership and communication skills that are transferable to any public service position You will have the opportunity to participate in events with front line public services that will enable you to develop your CV. 

What qualification will I gain? 

We offer the Level 1, 2 and 3 Diploma and Level 3 Extended Diploma NCFE (National Certificate for Entry) into the Public Services, Level 2 BTEC Diploma and Level 3 Subsidiary and Extended Diploma in Public Services. For explanations of our qualifications, please see our Qualification Explained page. All learners will also receive training in first aid and fire safety in conjunction with NMTC.

What progression options will I have? 

You can progress from a Level 1 course to a Level 2 courses and on to a Level 3 courses. Successful completion of the full Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services will enable you to apply to university.  Depending on the entry requirements of your chosen public service, you may also be able to apply directly to that service.  

What costs are involved? 

You will need to purchase a uniform, approx £100, but full cost can be found on the individual course descriptions. There are compulsory trips on all courses. We take a £50 deposit at enrolment and we aim for all trips to cost in the region of £300 per year (1 trip taken each year). Full-time further education courses are free for students aged 16-18, you may have to pay some or all of your fees if you are aged 19 plus, but please see our Student Finance page for further information. 

Entry requirements? 

For the Level 1 NCFE you must be working towards GCSEs. For the Level 2 you need to have achieved four A*-D (9-3) grades at GCSE, including Maths and English. For the Level 3 you must have achieved five A*-C (9-4) grades ar GCSE, including Maths and English.
