The Intern

5th January 2018

I think the credit should rightfully go to my tutor for suggesting it but, if the truth be told, I had wanted to get some on-the-job training when I first began my Foundation Degree at the NKC Dartford campus.

I suppose it all began during my first week on campus, I came across a brochure in reception and thought to myself “I’d really like to volunteer to come up with brochures like these”.  I put the brochure in my bag (I’m a bit of a magpie when it comes to magazines and brochures) and forgot about it; after all, my life was busy enough going back to full time education after 20 years and two kids.  Then, out of nowhere, at the end of my first year one of my tutors suggested I apply to the NKC Marketing Department to get some work experience and I jumped at the chance.  The Head of Marketing was so helpful and patient in arranging available dates and the best thing was the flexibility; I could arrange the days and hours to suit my busy life and time commitments.

So right now, it seems slightly surreal to finally be here!  I’ve just completed a two day work experience placement and I can honestly say, I don’t want to go back to my real life.  Each of the team members (including the boss!) spent an hour one-on-one with me, talking me through their roles and responsibilities and what their jobs entailed.  I asked endless questions about everything, but I think the highlight of the experience was getting answers to questions I’d had for years but was too afraid to ask.  Honestly, I didn’t think it was possible to learn so much in such a short space of time.

Although I am not studying for a career in marketing, there are many aspects of marketing that cross over with the industry I want to go into, so I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity and am sure that the experience will stand me in good stead for my future career.

A huge thank you to the Marketing Department and to my tutor and generally to NKC!
