North Kent College Buzzwords

15th January 2019

College terminology can be confusing sometimes, especially if you are new at NKC. That’s why we wanted to create a short blog explaining some of the key terms that we use internally and externally. Let us know how many you got correct!

Industry placements- Industry placements are designed to give students on Level 3 courses, aged 16-18, up to 50 days of relevant and substantive placements.

Bursary- To assist students from low-income households with the costs of attending college.

If you need support with your Bursary form, you can contact us or check out our Student Financial Support page for further details.

Vocational Courses- These courses provide job-focused training for specific roles or careers. If you want to start work at 18, employers prefer practical skills and experience to academic qualifications, so a vocational course may be better for you.

LTC- The Learning Technology Centre. These are available at both of our Campuses and are great for both study and leisure. The LTC has a library facility, Wi-Fi, DVD rentals, computers, study areas, a stationery shop, software tutorials and much more. They are open from 8.45am until 5pm Monday to Thursday and until 4.30pm on Fridays.

NUS- National Union of Students. When you are a student you can apply for a TOTUM card which allows you to get discounts from your favourite shops and restaurants.

You can apply for your own TOTUM card here!

Short Courses- These are Short Learning Programmes where you will develop new skills to help you with your career. At NKC we offer a wide range of commercial and short courses to suit both business and individual needs.

GDPR- GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation. GDPR is designed for collecting details from individuals, protecting their personal information.

Alumni- Alumni is a former pupil. We like to keep in contact with our Alumni to see what they have progressed onto after their studies with us. It also gives prospective and current students a flavour of what it's like to study at North Kent College, as well as helping them understand what they can progress onto with their qualification.

Enrolment- Enrolment is the process of making you a fully-fledged student.

We hope you have learnt a few new words or gained a further understanding of the terms we use at NKC. If we missed any words or if you would like to contact us with your questions, don’t hesitate to talk to us.
