Local Lecturer makes Romanian Link

12th April 2017

A North Kent College lecturer and his wife have continued to build an innovative and successful link with people in Bucharest Romania.

Neil Nixon – who runs the Foundation Degree in Professional Writing at the Dartford site of North Kent College – and his wife Jane made their fifth visit to Bucharest over Easter to continue working on a programme in which psychotherapist Jane teaches the skills of her profession and Neil uses creative writing exercises to explore aspects of psychotherapy.

Neil says: “the work we are doing pushes barriers every year but we’ve been successful to the point that we’re now looking two years ahead to continue the work. It’s incredible to take the kind of material I use to teach people to write for a living and see it used in ways that change lives in a different way – often by helping people appreciate the experience of others.”

On a previous visit the couple met Romanian tennis legend Ilie Nastase – who now works to forge business links between his country and the outside world – and on their 2016 visit they met a former Romanian ambassador to the UK who encouraged them to involve the British Embassy in Bucharest in supporting future visits.

Neil says: “this started with me taking my skills out there to feed to the group but now the work we are doing is benefitting my work at the college.”
