North Kent College host Best in Kent
5th July 2017
North Kent College were proud to host The Best in Kent competition, attended by three other Kent colleges on Wednesday 21st June at their Gravesend Campus.
The competition that has been running between the colleges for over 10 years, involves different trade areas, giving students the experience to showcase what they’ve learnt over the time of their course. Tutors from North Kent, MidKent, West Kent and Canterbury College selected students from Carpentry & Joinery, Painting & Decoration and Bricklaying to take part.
They were given 6 hours for the practical task to be completed, with no prep time beforehand. This was a challenge for all learners involved, but the final competition standards were extremely high and all students created some exceptional work. After judging, the winners were announced, with MidKent taking home the trophies for Bricklaying, Joinery and Painting & Decorating and Canterbury College winning Site Carpentry.
Mark Baldwin, North Kent College Brickwork Lecturer, was very pleased with the students’ work saying “We have a great partnership with other Kent colleges enabling learners to interact with each other. It develops their skills base and allows them to compare their ability to other students in the County”.
NKC encourage its students to enter competitions such as these, as it allows the students to gain practical experience that prepares them for the industry, whilst giving them an insight of what other learners from around the county can achieve. Local company Johnsons Paint also showed their support by donating all the paint needed for the day.
Terry Howard, MidKent College's Brickwork Lecturer commented, "We all had a good day, and are looking forward to possibly hosting next year's competition. It's brilliant to see what the pupils can achieve in the limited time".
