North Kent College student cooks up a storm at Pro Cooks Competition

7th December 2017

Colleges from across Kent came together for the annual Kent Cooks: The Professionals competition to showcase catering students and the talents they have been learning in their training.

Sherin Jiji, a Level 3 Professional Cookery student, was the North Kent College entry, and was awarded 2nd place by Pieter Van Zyl from Chequers Kitchen Cookery School, for her innovative and tasteful menu.

The inter-college competition offers young chefs the experience to show their knowledge of food and flavour in a Masterchef-style contest, where they are judged on cooking techniques, presentation, budget and taste. Each entrant was given a specification to create 2 portions each of a main and a dessert within a 2 ½ hour timescale, costing a maximum of £12 a head. There was a focus on the usage of local, fresh produce and the judges marked accordingly for the menus that represented this.

Commenting on her experience, runner- up Sherin Jiji commented, “It was fun, I gained great experience and everyone was wonderful and friendly. The judges were great and gave me detailed feedback to use in my future cooking. If I had another chance, I would love to do it again”.

Keith Campbell, North Kent College’s Catering Chef lecturer, spoke highly of Sherin, “She has worked hard in producing her dishes to get perfection, whilst taking in consideration, seasons, textures, dietary requirements and costs. Her skills and knowledge gained from this experience have exceeded my expectations and made her a more confident chef”.
