Creative Media student joins BBC Radio host for experience of a lifetime

16th February 2018

One of our Creative Media students was recently given an incredible chance within BBC Radio Kent. Ben Hopkinson, currently studying Creative Media TV & Radio Level 4 HNC, was given the opportunity to shadow Dominic King on his live radio show, providing hands on work experience during his studies.

After speaking with his tutor, Ben was put in touch with a contact at BBC Radio Kent, and using his initiative, asked for the chance of work experience to add to his CV. They were eager to ask him down, and gave him the chance to join them for a day. During the visit, he not only got to see the live action taking place in the studio and gallery, but was also given information on the software and techniques used within both areas. The highlight to the day was being allowed to participate in a segment during the show, and was featured live on air!

Ben has previously completed his Level 3 qualification at the college, and decided to progress onto our Higher Education Course. Whilst studying, he has been producing the award winning Miskin Radio show; The Kieran Poole Sessions, which has cemented his passion for his future career.

Ben found the trip to be very inspiring and commented, “Within the media industry, you need to go out there and get recognised. Just keep pushing, asking and being patient. I had such a great day at BBC Radio Kent, sitting in and shadowing Dominic King’s Drivetime show. I have been waiting for an opportunity like this for years, and this is just one big step towards my main goal”.
