Hospitality & Catering
The Catering department at North Kent College is renowned for its quality of provision and its enviable reputation for providing the best training for students wanting to pursue a career in the Hospitality Industry. With the huge demand for well-trained chefs and Hospitality staff in this fast growing and dynamic industry and partnerships with hospitality business – the Culinary Academy was born.
Our Foundation and Diploma programmes are taught in state-of-the-art kitchens and restaurant on the Gravesend Campus. They are taught by industry specialists and supplemented by ‘real life’ experience in our fully functional restaurant and Canteen – both of which are open to the public. Work placements and employer enrichment activities with local and national partners give the programmes extra kudos; enabling students to begin a career as a chef, food and beverage personnel, supervisors and managers.
What will I learn?
You will gain knowledge and develop practical skills in our well equipped kitchens, restaurant and classrooms. You will be assessed for particular skills, practically, by short answer tests and assignment work.
What qualification will I gain?
You will gain important and transferable skills and industry recognised qualifications in Professional Cookery and Professional Food and Beverage Service. For explanations please click on the links for our programmes.
What progression options will I have?
Successful completion of our Gateway to Catering and certificate programme will allow progression onto our Professional Chef and Food Service Diplomas. Subsequent successful completion will allow access to our Advanced Diploma programmes, apprenticeships or skills required to directly enter the industry – see our progression routes.
What costs are involved?
There are additional costs of uniform and knives dependant on entry point. The Gateway programme incurs costs around £70 and Professional Diploma programmes £180. In addition, there is also a course contribution cost payable, currently £60 for ingredients and enrichment trips and events. Full time Further Education courses are free for students aged 16-18, you may have to pay some or all of your fees if you are aged 19 plus, please see our Student Finance page for further information.
No formal qualifications are required for our Foundation and Certificate programmes. GCSE Grade 2 or above in English and Maths are advised for the Professional Diploma programmes. 9-4 GCSE grades including English and Maths for the Advanced Diploma programmes; and 5 9-4 GCSE grades, including English and Maths for our Level 3 Diploma on the Dartford Campus.
