Student typing

You might not think about it often, but the simple act of typing has transformed how we work, learn, and communicate.

Today (8 January) is World Typing Day, a day to recognise the value of fast, accurate typing and how it continues to power our modern world, from professional emails and legal documents to everyday texts and digital storytelling.

This annual event began in Malaysia in 2011 to mark the importance of written communication and to promote typing speed, precision, and efficiency. The date, 8 January, was chosen as it falls just after New Year, a perfect time to write down your goals, ideas and reflections for the year ahead.

Typing might seem second nature now, but it’s rooted in a long and fascinating history. Since the invention of the typewriter in the 19th century, through the arrival of electric typewriters, and now to touchscreen keyboards and AI-assisted editing, our tools have changed but the value of clear, professional written communication hasn’t.

At North Kent College, we recognise the importance of these core skills, particularly in our Legal and Office Support courses. Whether you’re training to become a Legal Secretary, Admin Assistant or exploring a future in professional services, strong typing and written communication skills are essential.

So today, whether you’re tapping out an essay, crafting a CV, or just sending a message to a friend, take a moment to appreciate the skill behind your keystrokes.

If you’re passionate about turning those skills into a professional career, visit the Legal and Office Support subject page on the North Kent College website.
