Today (Saturday 8 November) is National STEM Day – a celebration of all things science, technology, engineering and maths, and a chance to recognise the vital role these subjects play in shaping our world.
STEM skills don’t just drive innovation and progress , they also open the door to exciting, well-paid and future-proof careers. As industries continue to evolve, demand for STEM expertise continues to rise. In fact, more than one million STEM-related jobs have been created in the UK over the last seven years alone.
However, despite this rapid growth, a nationwide shortage of STEM skills remains – especially among underrepresented groups. Women, for example, make up just 26% of the STEM workforce.
Graduates entering fields such as engineering and technology also benefit from strong employment prospects, with mean starting salaries reported to be 18% higher than average, according to Engineering UK.
At North Kent College, we offer a range of courses within the STEM spectrum to help you develop the knowledge, skills and experience you need to thrive.
Our Engineering Department delivers a variety of vocational courses in specialist facilities, including a machine shop with welding and fabrication tools and well-equipped electronic laboratories. Courses are delivered by staff with strong industry backgrounds to ensure you learn what really matters.
We also offer exciting options in Computing and Games Development, one of the UK’s fastest-growing creative tech sectors. You’ll explore everything from game design and programming to digital storytelling and professional practice, guided by tutors who bring real-world experience from both industry and academia.
Our Business and Finance courses, including accounting qualifications, also sit within the broader STEM family, and can open up routes into data-driven roles in finance, analytics and beyond.
Whether you’re passionate about numbers, coding, mechanics or problem-solving, there’s a STEM course waiting for you.
