Joining North Kent College in 2023 marked an exciting new chapter in my career after spending over 30 years in accountancy. My role as Employability and Supplementary Lecturer / Personal Tutor within the Motor Vehicle department is completely unique, giving me the chance to support around 180 students each week. I saw it as an opportunity to make a real difference helping young people build confidence, develop professionalism, and recognise the transferable skills that will help them succeed in the motor industry and beyond.
What I love most about working with students is how much they challenge me. Media is such a creative subject, and there are so many ways to approach things. I have my go-to methods from industry, but the students constantly push me to look at things differently, they challenge not just how I create, but how I teach. It keeps me on my toes and turns every lesson into a puzzle to figure out what really clicks for them AND me!
I joined North Kent College two years ago as a Senior Instructor, and at the start of my second year I stepped into the Practitioner role while working towards my Level 5 teaching qualification, which I’m proud to say I achieved that same year. Now, at the beginning of my third year, I’ve taken on a new challenge as a Lecturer.
I’m passionate about helping the next generation succeed and proud to contribute to shaping future professionals in this dynamic industry.
Following completion of an apprenticeship directly after leaving school, I qualified as an Electrical Engineer with an HNC in Electrical Building Services.
Cars and engineering have always been my main interest - the trips to Brands Hatch and the Goodwood Festival of Speed have forever been etched into my mind. From an early age, I knew I wanted to build a career in the Motorsport industry.
One of the rewarding things about working in the college community is the diversity of the students. I’ve had to tackle motivating young people who have lots of different starting points when it comes to my course.
Teaching at NKC has given me the opportunity to share my knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm for the industry, while inspiring students to follow their own journeys to achieving their dream career paths.
