Joining North Kent College in 2023 marked an exciting new chapter in my career after spending over 30 years in accountancy. My role as Employability and Supplementary Lecturer / Personal Tutor within the Motor Vehicle department is completely unique, giving me the chance to support around 180 students each week. I saw it as an opportunity to make a real difference helping young people build confidence, develop professionalism, and recognise the transferable skills that will help them succeed in the motor industry and beyond.

Transitioning from accountancy into teaching was a big change, but the support from colleagues and managers made it a smooth and positive experience. Through mentoring, training, and guidance, I learned how to tailor employability content to the Motor Vehicle curriculum, ensuring lessons are engaging and relevant to students’ futures.

What I enjoy most is seeing students grow, not just in their technical ability, but in their confidence and ambition. Watching them develop skills that prepare them for the workplace is incredibly rewarding. No two days are ever the same, and I love being part of their journey watching them develop professionalism, teamwork, and pride in their work. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that I’m helping them prepare not just for employment, but for a successful future.

Alongside teaching, I’ve been completing my NCFE Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, which has strengthened my classroom delivery and deepened my understanding of inclusive and engaging teaching.

Looking back, joining NKC and becoming part of the Motor Vehicle team has been one of the most positive decisions I’ve ever made. Whilst it has been challenging, I’ve found the transition into teaching to be deeply fulfilling, supportive and a pleasure to be part of an inspiring environment that encourages both staff and students to reach their full potential.
