We have received your application for Music Performance at NKC Tonbridge. You are being invited to attend an audition to showcase your talent and potentially receive a place on the course. The audition will take place as part of a small group. After the practical task has taken place, we will speak to each applicant individually to discuss their application. PRACTICAL TASK
Everyone
Perform a piece of music or song on your main instrument that showcases your ability. This should be between 1 to 2 minutes long. It doesn’t doesn’t have to be overly complicated but should demonstrate your current skills. You can use a backing track or play on your own. We want this to be a piece of music/ song that you are passionate about and enjoy playing.
In addition, you may be asked during your audition to perform the tasks relevant to your instrument that have been outlined below. You only need to complete the tasks related to your main instrument e.g., if you are a drummer, you only complete the tasks in the ‘Drums’ sections.
Vocals
- Sing one octave of a major and minor pentatonic scale in a key of your choosing
- Sing a short melody to a famous song on your own i.e., without the backing of chords or melody
Guitar
- Play the following chords in open position: C major, G major, E minor, D minor, C7 & A7
- Play the following barre chords - 6th string root: G major & A minor 5th string root: C major & D minor
- Play the following scales over two octaves: G major and A minor pentatonic
Piano
- Play two octaves of a major and minor pentatonic scale in a key of your choosing
- Play and identify triads and seventh chords in a key of your choice e.g., major, minor, dominant, and diminished
Bass
- Play the following scales over two octaves: G major and A minor pentatonic
- Identify and play roots and fifths in three different keys of your choice
Drums
- Play the following rudiments: doubles, standard paradiddle & 5 stroke roll
- Play three grooves in contrasting styles e.g., rock, funk, reggae, Latin or metal.
WRITTEN TASK 
Create a supporting statement of at least 500 words. Your statement should include the following information:
- A summary of your skills as an instrumentalist and musician
- Any experience you have of performing, writing or recording
- An overview of the music you like listening to or performing and an explanation of why you like it
- What you hope to go on to do after you have completed the course – this could be Level 3 Music, university or a career in the industry.
SCHOOL REPORT
You should bring a recent school report with you or email it to us prior to the audition. The school report should include an overview of current achievement, attitude to learning and predicted grades.
If your application is successful, you will receive a phone call and/or email within a week from your audition date to confirm any offer of a place with us.
