Today (19 September) marks National Tradesmen Day, a chance to recognise and appreciate the skilled men and women who keep our industries moving.

From electricians to bricklayers, carpenters to plumbers, this day celebrates the vital work of tradespeople across the UK.

If you’ve got a hands-on mindset and enjoy practical work, a career in the trades could be a perfect fit.

There’s also never been a better time to get started. According to the Office for National Statistics, there are nearly 250,000 fewer construction workers in the industry compared to three years ago, a shortage echoed by the Federation of Master Builders. That means opportunities are growing for those ready to train and fill the gap.

The good news is we have a range of courses here at North Kent College that could help you progress down that route.

We run a number of Construction courses at our Gravesend Campus with dedicated facilities for brickwork, painting and decorating, carpentry and multitrades.

If you are more interested in becoming an electrician, then our Gravesend Campus also offers Electrical Installation courses.

Gravesend is also where our Refrigeration and Air Conditioning courses are taught, whilst Plumbing and Heating courses are provided by our Tonbridge and Gravesend campuses.

You will learn in facilities that simulate real environments, so you get practical experience of the trade you will be working in.

If you are inspired by National Tradesmen Day to work in one of these industries you can start your journey by visiting the Subject List page of our website to find out in more detail about the area you are interested in.
