Sea training vessel on water

Today (25 June) is the Day of the Seafarer, a global observance led by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to celebrate the vital role seafarers play in keeping global trade and supply chains afloat.

Nearly 90% of the world’s goods are transported by sea, and behind this staggering figure are the dedicated men and women working tirelessly aboard vessels to ensure smooth and safe deliveries across the globe. From navigating difficult waters to spending long stretches away from family, seafarers make personal sacrifices every day to keep the world moving.

As a United Nations-recognised observance, the Day of the Seafarer not only highlights their crucial contribution to the global economy, but also calls attention to the challenges they face, including safety, fair treatment in ports, and living conditions at sea.

At North Kent College, we’re proud to support the future of the maritime industry through the National Maritime Training Centre (NMTC), based at our Gravesend campus. The NMTC offers a wide range of STCW-approved short courses, apprenticeships, and specialist training in areas such as firefighting, sea survival, security awareness and marine engineering, all taught by industry professionals using dedicated Thameside facilities.
