Today (6 April) is the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), a global observance that highlights the incredible power of sport to drive positive change in communities, promote inclusion, and support peace.Â
Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013, and first celebrated in 2014, this date was chosen to mark the opening of the first modern Olympic Games, held on 6 April 1896 in Athens. It serves as a reminder that sport has the unique ability to unite people across borders, cultures and beliefs.Â
Sport is far more than physical activity, it promotes health and wellbeing, teaches teamwork and discipline, empowers young people, and strengthens communities. The UN recognises it as a cost-effective and flexible tool to support its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from gender equality and education to peacebuilding and economic growth.Â
At North Kent College, we couldn’t agree more.Â
Our Personal Training & Sport Science and Sports Coaching & Performance programmes are built on the idea that sport has the power to transform lives. Â
Whether you're passionate about fitness, coaching, rehabilitation or community health, our courses offer real-world training, expert guidance, and access to fantastic facilities at our Dartford Campus, including a sports hall, strength and conditioning suite, and a dedicated sports massage clinic.Â
We’re proud to support students from all backgrounds as they explore future careers in areas like coaching, personal training, sports therapy, health promotion, and performance analysis. Many of our learners have even gone on to represent their county, region or country in sport.Â
So, whether you want to change lives through sport or push yourself to be the best you can be, today is a great day to take the first step.Â
