Today (29 July) is National Lipstick Day, a celebration of creativity, self-expression, and the rich cultural history of one of beauty’s boldest icons.
The modern lipstick is believed to have been developed by French brand Maison Guerlain around 1870, blending waxes with oils to achieve that signature shine.
Once considered controversial well into the 20th century for its so-called “provocative” appeal, lipstick has long symbolised individuality and empowerment.
It was stars like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor who brought red lipstick into the spotlight, changing its perception from taboo to timeless. More recently, Taylor Swift helped lead a red-lip revival in the 2000s, just as the beauty industry began offering a broader spectrum of shades and finishes.
These days, lipstick is far more than just a lip product, many use it as blush, eyeshadow or even for contouring, proving its versatility in any makeup bag.
