Today (25 September) is World Maritime Day, a day to reflect on just how much the ocean does for us, and how vital it is that we protect and work with it sustainably.

This year’s theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” highlights the essential role oceans play in sustaining life and driving the global economy. From transporting over 80% of international trade to regulating the climate and supporting millions of jobs, the ocean touches every part of our lives.

At North Kent College, the role the ocean plays is very important to us, as we are home to the National Maritime Training Centre (NMTC), based at our Gravesend campus.

The NMTC is a hub for high-quality maritime education and professional development. It offers a wide range of short courses, including MCA-Approved STCW training like Firefighting, Sea Survival, First Aid, and Safety Boat Handling, as well as longer-term qualifications such as Diplomas in Maritime Studies and Apprenticeship programmes.

Training takes place in industry-standard facilities including a Thameside Jetty and Fire Training Ground, ensuring that students gain the hands-on experience they need for a career in this critical sector. With flexible delivery options, specialist staff, and a strong reputation for employer collaboration, the centre equips learners at all stages of their career journey.

Whether you’re just starting out, looking to upskill, or training your team, the National Maritime Training Centre can help you navigate a future in a field that’s shaping the world.
