Today (Wednesday 29 April) is International Dance Day, a celebration of movement, rhythm and the universal language of dance.Â
Founded in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), this global event is held annually on the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), widely regarded as the creator of modern ballet.Â
International Dance Day aims to promote dance in all its forms, raise awareness of its cultural and social value, and encourage people everywhere to enjoy the art of dance for its own sake. A central tradition of the day is the release of a message written by a leading choreographer or dancer, translated into multiple languages and shared around the world.Â
