Today (Monday 11 May) marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK, seven days that are dedicated to supporting good mental health.
This is a very important week as it is estimated that around 1 in 4 17- to 19-year-olds in England experience a mental health problem each year*.
Every year the Mental Health Foundation sets a different theme for the week, and the theme this year is ‘action’ and the positive steps people can take to boost their mental health.
From planning something to look forward to and eating well to talking things over with someone you trust, there are lots of simple actions you can do that can make a difference.
At North Kent College we know all too well how challenging life can be at times, especially as you adjust to starting a new part of your life, gaining greater independence and settling in to college life.
You may be feeling overwhelmed, depressed or lacking in confidence. There might be something going on that you don’t feel able to share with friends or family. Whatever it is, we are here to help you get through whatever is happening.
We provide a wide range of assistance, including personalised one-to-one support through our Welfare and Safeguarding Offices and group support sessions for issues such as anxiety and depression, life changes and bereavement.
You can also access our professional and confidential counselling services to talk through issues affecting your personal or college life. In addition, we have a wide range of mental health resources, self-help strategies and activities to help you or someone you know.
