Vocational Courses: What Are They?
Vocational courses differ from A-Levels insofar as they focus on preparing you for a specific career, trade occupation, or industry. Rather than teaching you a variety of academic subjects, your chosen course will focus on one area of expertise, alongside the specific skills, training, and knowledge required to succeed within it. This will help you to impress future employers!
Here at North Kent College, our course list is extensive. Ranging from Business and Computing, Construction and Engineering, Hairdressing, Sport, Hospitality, Arts, Travel and more, we have something for you.
When you are feeling sure about your course choice, make sure to check which of our three campuses (Dartford, Gravesend, and Tonbridge) it is based at.
If you think it would be useful to hear from students who have studied on the course you are interested in, please consult our course pages. These will also tell you about potential career progression options after completion.
Maybe I’m Better Suited to an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a job, where you will mainly be working in your chosen profession, with a smaller portion of studying involved than on traditional courses.
So, what does that look like?
This route means that as an apprentice, you will spend 80% of your time in the workplace gaining practical experience, and 20% of working hours in training and development. The latter might take place at either college or your workplace.
We are leading apprenticeship providers, and offer apprenticeships in several sectors such as Hairdressing, Maritime and Engineering.

What About T-Levels?
These are a technical alternative to A-Levels, which offer a mixture of classroom-based learning and workplace skills acquisition for your subject, via a 45-day industry placement.
Introduced in September 2020 for 16–18-year-olds, 1 T-Level is the equivalent of 3 A-Levels. T-Levels are not wholly academic. We currently offer a selection of T-Levels (which is set to grow), from Construction and Engineering, Early Years, Healthcare, and more.
