Here at North Kent College, our professional theatre, run by industry-background teaching staff, gives our Acting course students the perfect place to break their first leg (metaphorically speaking of course!).
Our three Acting courses attract students who come to the College seeking tuition, guidance and support from tutors who have been in the industry, and still work within it.
This gives our students a strong understanding of where the industry has come from, where it is now and its future, helping to prepare them for their career in acting.
Past students have gone on to a variety of roles on stage and screen, including Kirsty J Curtis, who graduated in 2008. This year, you can see her in Reckless playing Veronica. It’s a crime comedy with Vinnie Jones, Scott Adkins and Nicole Deon that premiered in cinemas in May and is now available on streaming services.
When we last spoke to her in 2023, she said: “These guys taught me my craft and discipline, and I am always forever grateful to them.”
And it’s exactly these vital skills that Kirsty took away, alongside many more, that our courses teach – whether students are on the Level 2, 3 or 4 courses.
The Miskin experience of learning in a professional working environment, taught by directors, will support its trainee actors in becoming well-trained, clear-thinking performers, who are ready to move into the industry.
Performances, shows and films (course dependent), are written, produced and performed throughout the courses, giving real life experience and understanding of what’s needed for the industry.
In addition to the performance side, students also develop competencies that employers look for, including teamwork, self-confidence, communication, social skills, problem-solving, initiative, self-motivation, and the ability to meet targets.
In fact, if students decide not to pursue a career in acting, these attributes are very easily transferrable and valuable to any workplace or experience they undertake next, whether that be a career, further education, or travel. Acting courses build confidence and our students are encouraged to find theirs.
