Today (3 May) is World Press Freedom Day , a moment to honour the vital role of journalism and the enduring importance of free, independent media.

Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993, this day marks the anniversary of the 1991 Windhoek Declaration, which emphasised the connection between a free press and democracy. Over three decades later, the need to protect the freedom to seek, receive and share information is just as pressing.

World Press Freedom Day serves as a global reminder to governments about their responsibility to uphold press freedom. It also gives media professionals a chance to reflect on the ethical standards and challenges of their work, particularly those reporting under threat or censorship.

It’s also a time to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the pursuit of truth. Their work, often carried out in dangerous conditions, underpins our understanding of the world around us.

At North Kent College, our Creative Media courses equip students with the tools and confidence to find their voice and tell important stories and offer real-world experience in a dynamic, professional setting.

With access to industry-standard equipment and hands-on guidance from experienced tutors, students develop the skills they need to pursue careers in the creative media and journalism industries.
