Costs & financial support

How much does an apprentice cost?

The cost of training your apprentice is dependent on their age and whether or not your business pays the Apprenticeship Levy.

You can hire an apprentice from £3.50 per hour (if under 18 and in the first year of an apprenticeship).

This rises for over 18s and when they progress into the second year. For example a 22 year old apprentice in their 2nd year would be paid a minimum of £7.05 per hour (April 2017).

The average salary for apprentices is approximately £170 per week, making apprentice recruitment an affordable way to grow your business and the skills of your staff.

Many organisations also choose to pay their apprentices a salary higher than the National Minimum Wage to reflect their value to the business, although this is not a requirement.

Is there any financial support available?

Because the government is keen to help businesses grow through apprenticeships, there are a range of different grants and incentives available to employers.

Our business advisers have up-to-date knowledge of the funding support available and are ideally placed to support you through the funding application process.

The latest Government information about the new Apprenticeship Levy can be found here.
