Beauty students

This Level 1 qualification introduces learners to the hair, beauty and make up industry and the essential skills required to assist in a salon environment. Key areas of study include:

Professional standards and salon etiquette Health and safety in the salon Client care and communication Basic Make up Basic Manicure Basic Pedicure Basic Face Paint Shampooing and conditioning Basic blow-drying and styling techniques Plaiting and Twisting Basic Colour Techniques

Training begins with practice on training heads and peers, progressing to work with family, friends, and members of the public in our fully equipped commercial salons.

Learners are expected to maintain high standards of professionalism at all times, including wearing the North Kent College branded uniform and bringing their kit to every salon session. This applies across all college spaces and during external visits or placements.

Functional Skills or GCSE English and Maths are delivered alongside vocational training. These subjects are important to you as Maths and English is naturally occurring in the Hair, Beauty and Make up Industries. Maths and English lessons will help to prepare you for the next level of qualification.

Students are encouraged to seek part-time or voluntary work in salons to enhance their learning and personal development.

  • What qualification will I gain?

    CG L1 Diploma in Hair and Beauty (Beauty Therapy and Make Up Pathway)

  • Entry Requirements

    A genuine interest in the Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy and Make Up Artistry Industry . A satisfactory school report to include evidence of attendance above 85% and good behaviour and attitude. Completion of GCSE?s and an achievement of a minimum Grade 1 in both English & Maths. Your enrolment is also subject to a successful interview, written task, photographic evidence and completion of a practical and theory skills assessment during taster days.

    Homeschooled applicants are required to provide evidence of engagement with the Functional Skills Level 1 or GCSE curriculum in both Mathematics and English, together with a reference from a tutor. In addition, applicants must present proof of registration for the forthcoming summer series examinations.

  • What progression options will I have?

    Progress onto the Level 2 Beauty Therapy programme or Level 2 Hair and Media Make up, where they will continue to develop their practical skills and technical knowledge.

    Apply for apprenticeships within the hairdressing and beauty industry, gaining valuable hands-on experience in paid employment while continuing their education.?

    Explore related programmes such as Level 2 Hairdressing depending on their interests and career aspirations.?

  • What costs are involved?

    Tuition Fees: 16-18 - free 19+ - ?1650 Exam and Registration Fees (payable by all aged 19 and over): ?120

  • How will I be assessed?

    Assessment is continuous throughout the course. You will be assessed using a variety of methods including: observation, oral questioning, written questioning, online exams and assignment work. ?

    Approximately 13 written assignments? Demonstration of practical performance? Approximately 2 online exams?
