Today (4 May) is International Firefighters’ Day, a global opportunity to honour those who put themselves at risk to protect others.

Celebrated each year on 4 May, International Firefighters’ Day recognises the dedication, bravery and sacrifice of firefighters around the world.

It also serves as a poignant tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, including five Australian firefighters whose tragic deaths in 1998 inspired the creation of this annual day of reflection and respect.

Observed worldwide, the day includes a symbolic Sound Off tribute: fire sirens ring out for 30 seconds at noon local time on the first Sunday in May, followed by a minute’s silence to remember fallen firefighters. Red and blue ribbons are worn by supporters, with red symbolising fire, and blue symbolising water, the two elements firefighters work with every day.

At North Kent College, our Public Services courses are designed to equip students with the skills, stamina and discipline needed for challenging careers in the emergency services, including the fire service.

You’ll gain real insight into life in the uniformed services, with practical training, guest speakers, and trips that prepare you for a role that makes a difference.
