Catering students win the prestigious 'Ashes'

20th July 2017

NKC were proud winners of “The Ashes Cooking Challenge”. A competition against Mid Kent College and held at the Mid Kent Gillingham Campus, it involved a cook off between three students from each college.
A team made up of Professional Level 2 & 3 Cookery students cooked a variety of dishes which were then critiqued by judges who are industry experts. The students from North Kent were Callum Burman, Subanan Mahendrarajah and Chloe McCoy, who took the role of Team Leader.

Each team had 2 hours to cook and serve a 3 course meal plus an amuse bouche, within a budget of £40. One student had the job of bringing out the food and explaining the dish to the judges before it could be tasted and marked.

The competition standards were extremely high and both teams created some exceptional dishes to try and obtain the coveted title and plaque. Both teams stayed professional throughout, giving their peers the chance to see what they will be competing against when they leave college and go into the industry.

Setting up “The Ashes” catering competition has built great relationships between North Kent and Mid Kent catering areas. It has allowed both establishments to share best practice and set high standards for their students.  It allows the students to exchange skills and experience correct working practice in a high pressure environment.

North Kent College Catering lecturer Keith Campbell said, ‘
This was a great opportunity for the students to apply their knowledge in menu design, costing ingredients and seasonality.  All three students had worked hard in designing the menu to reflect the competition requirements. They also practiced tirelessly, sometimes late into the evening.  Chloe lead her team well throughout the whole experience and on the day was outstanding with her communication skills which kept the team motivated.  It has been a pleasure for me to teach these students who are so passionate about food and I will be sad to see them go”.

Both Colleges look forward to the next competition in 2018 where other students can showcase their skills and talent in the kitchen.
