MAC Cosmetics recently visited our Dartford campus to deliver an inspiring and informative session for our Level 2 and 3 Makeup Artistry students.
Makeup artists, Sam and Rachel led the session, sharing their career journeys and professional insights alongside a makeup demonstration on one of our students. As they created the look, they explained which products they were using, how they were applied and why those choices were made, giving students a clear understanding of professional makeup techniques.
Sam and Rachel also spoke about their experiences working backstage at fashion shows, including London Fashion Week, highlighting the importance of professionalism, organisation, and teamwork. They shared what they consider essential items in a professional makeup kit, such as makeup remover, medical tape, spoolies, sponges, spare lashes, explaining that kits should always be adapted depending on the brief and assigned role.

Students learned what to expect when working backstage, including managing multiple models, assisting other artists with touch-ups, staying productive during quieter moments and being flexible when models are called away. The artists shared valuable tips to help students enter the industry, encouraging them to say yes to opportunities, remain reliable and organised, take time perfecting looks and always check makeup under good lighting, recommending always having a small light accessible. They emphasised that eagerness, professionalism, and a positive attitude can lead to further opportunities.
Sam and Rachel also explained how they entered the makeup industry. Sam shared that she did not attend university, instead completed training at a makeup school in London, before moving into photography, freelance bridal makeup and later joining MAC. They also outlined the process of joining the MAC pro-team, which involves completing advanced certifications and assessments that tests their ability to recreate set looks, work under pressure and adapt makeup looks to different models.
The two shared their proudest career moments with the students. Sam spoke about working at London Fashion Week, where she completed A makeup look for Kate Moss’s daughter who was modelling. Rachel spoke about being chosen to design the whole makeup look for the Burlesque show advertisement.
Sophie, one of our makeup students, said:
“The session was really good as they gave lots of detail and information on how to get into the industry. They also gave insight into what it’s like being in fashion week and what it’s like being in a busy environment. They gave us helpful tips: the more you say okay, the more opportunities will arrive. The session also helped in deciding what industry I want to get into, like fashion, photography etc. It gave me that extra confirmation.”
Niki, one of our Makeup Artist lecturers also added:
“This session was beneficial for the students as they’re hearing directly from industry professionals, not just lecturers. It helps inspire them and gives a realistic insight into careers in fashion, photography and film. It also helps them understand that jobs aren’t handed to you – you must work hard and gain experience – even if that means starting out as an assistant. A positive attitude and a ‘can-do’ energy make a huge difference.
